Istanbul on a Budget

The city of Istanbul attracts tourists from around the world and the numbers keep increasing. The various attractions of the city including the Blue Mosque, the Marmara Sea and the numerous heritage buildings and mosques, make this a much sought after vacation destination. Fortunately, for anyone visiting this charming city, there are plenty of accommodation options available. For those on a budget there are many hotels and hostels in Istanbul which will suit your wallet, no matter how thin.  Cheap accommodation can be found throughout the city, both on the European site of Istanbul and on the other side of the Bosphorus known as the Asian side. The Sultanahmet,  and Taksim districts are the best places to look for if you are seeking a budget lodging centrally located on the European side of Istanbul.

There is also cheaper accommodation available in Kadıköy (the Asian part of Istanbul), but you won’t be in central Istanbul.  You will have to take a ferry or a taxi over the Istanbul bridge to get to your hotel on the Asian/Anatolian side of Istanbul.  These are the three areas you want to be near to and can start your hotel search here.

Almost all the budget hotels here offer modern amenities in Istanbul. One good example for a good budget hotel is the Istanbul Paris Hostel Hotel. This privately run youth hostel/budget hotel offers value inexpensive accommodation with rooms starting at 20 € for the numerous backpackers and budget minded travelers who visit this historical city. The Paris Hostel Hotel has single, double, triple and dormitory- styled rooms.  Located on Piyerloti cad, Dizdariye Medresesi Sk.No: 9/11 Cemberlitas, the Paris Hostel Hotel is near the city’s major attractions such as the Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome. It is a favorite with visitors to the city.  A private room comes with your daily breakfast, so that’s a nice perk.

The hotel is located in a quiet environment, yet right in the heart of the city. A single room at the Sunlight Hotel starts at 30€  per night with breakfast, air conditioning, 24 hour room service.  Many of the city’s attractions are just a short walk away from the Sunlight Hotel, making it extremely convenient for getting around.

Many of the budget hotels will also arrange for an Istanbul city tour too, at an extra charge though which is great for a first time tourist to Istanbul. But first inquire about the charges before you sign up for a tour of Istanbul.  The main tourist sites are luckily all centrally located.  Also, take an inexpensive ferry ride up the Bosphorus to see more of the city from the water’s perspective.  Doing Istanbul on the cheap?  Pick up a book on Istanbul and create your own walking tour of Istanbul.

As far as dining is concerned, you can pay as much or as little as you like for a meal at the restaurants in Istanbul. The food you’ll be eating is absolutely delicious, fresh and healthy.  Köfta, lamb, lentils, arugula salad, rice and roasted peppers are all common food eaten by the locals of Istanbul.

You can find almost all the modern amenities available in most of the budget hotels in Istanbul. Private bathrooms, mini bar, satellite TV, and telephone are some of them as well as a 24 hour front desk reception, wireless internet and breakfast included with the cost of a hotel room. Most of these budget hotels also have their own restaurant facilities, breakfast is included.  Some hotels in Istanbul also have wonderful terraces and that is something to consider when choosing a hotel.  The views in Istanbul are usually breathtaking especially if you are lucky to get a terrace or balcony which looks out over the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara. Amenities are more limited in the hostels, but it’s a different kind of vacation experience and usually at a cheaper accommodation price.
